Since I tried a Tommy’s Margarita for the first time at the Flying Dutchmen in Amsterdam, I have had no doubt that there is no better cocktail in the world (so far). And it only has three ingredients! It’s a modern twist on a classic margarita and the simplicity of it makes for the purest flavours. And if you’re not a cocktail connoisseur, this is the perfect & easy beginner-friendly recipe.
The classic Tommy’s was created in the early 1990s by Julio Bermejo at Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant in San Francisco. The difference between a Tommy’s and a regular margarita? It swaps out the traditional orange liqueur (like Cointreau or Triple Sec) for agave syrup, which highlights the natural sweetness of the agave plant and allows the tequila to shine.

HOW TO MAKE A CLASSIC TOMMY’S

💡 Pro Tip: Serve in a Rocks glass instead of a Coupe glass with one large fresh ice cube!
ADDING A RASPBERRY TWIST
It’s easy! Just add in 6-8 raspberries or 0.5 oz raspberry syrup & enjoy it’s fruity, slightly tart flavor that complements the classic lime and tequila base.
Here’s the complete recipe for this drink:
Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) 100% agave tequila
- 1 oz (30 ml) fresh lime juice
- 0.5 oz (15 ml) agave syrup (adjust for sweetness)
- 6-8 fresh raspberries (or 0.5 oz raspberry syrup for convenience)
Instructions:
- Muddle the raspberries: In a cocktail shaker, muddle the fresh raspberries with the agave syrup to release the juice and flavor. Don’t have one? We recommend the Kittessensu Cocktail Shaker Set!
- Add remaining ingredients: Pour in the tequila and fresh lime juice.
- Shake: Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously until well-chilled.
- Strain: Double strain (fine mesh strainer) into a rocks glass over fresh ice to remove raspberry seeds.
- Garnish: Add a few raspberries on a skewer or a lime wheel for garnish. (A sprig of mint also adds a nice aromatic touch.)
- Optional: Salt or sugar rim the glass for extra flavuor contrast or create a personalised decoration using raspberry & lime. There’s so many combinations possible1
Tips:
- If you prefer a sweeter drink, add a touch more agave syrup.
- For a brighter raspberry flavor without the seeds, use a high-quality raspberry puree or syrup.
- Try using reposado tequila for a richer, slightly oaky flavor that pairs beautifully with the raspberries.
Enjoy your refreshing Raspberry Tommy’s Margarita! 🍹✨
