Since finding out how toxic candles are for the air we breathe at home, I started looking into alternatives and found seasonal simmer pots.
Simmer pots are a quick way to make your home smell & feel better. You don’t need to bake anything or spray anything. Just set a few ingredients in water and let them warm on the stove. The scent is soft, clean, and natural. These three summer blends use what you likely have on hand and help the air feel lighter without being too sweet or strong.
You don’t need to follow exact amounts. Just drop the ingredients into a pot, cover with water, and let it simmer on low. Refill the water as needed. You can leave the pot out for as long as you wish and reheat as needed. I leave mine our for many days. Today we will see three different ways to create the perfect summer simmer pot.

1. Citrus & Herb Reset
What you need:
- 1 orange, sliced
- A handful of fresh thyme or rosemary
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
This blend is bright but grounded. The orange brings a soft citrus scent without being sharp. The herbs add a green, herbal layer that keeps things feeling clean instead of sweet. Vanilla rounds it out with a bit of warmth, like sun on wood.
Use this one after cooking, especially if the kitchen still smells like garlic or oil. It helps reset the space without clashing with other scents in the house.

2. Mint & Lime Cool Down
What you need:
- A handful of fresh mint
- 1 lime, sliced
- A few slices of cucumber (optional)
This pot is crisp and refreshing, like stepping into a shady spot on a hot day. Mint cools the air in a subtle way, and lime adds a clean, sharp note that cuts through heat and humidity. Cucumber softens it, but it’s optional.
It’s a good one for afternoons when the air feels stale, or if you’ve had windows closed for too long. This blend doesn’t linger. It just gently clears the air.

3. Basil & Lemon Breeze
What you need:
- A few sprigs of basil
- 1 lemon, sliced
- 1 tsp coconut extract or a few shavings of coconut (optional)
This is a softer, garden-style scent. Basil brings a warm, earthy green note. Lemon brightens it without overpowering. If you want a bit of summer sweetness, add coconut, but you can leave it out for a fresher feel.
This pot feels right on slower days. It smells like open windows and freshly watered plants. Good for early mornings or winding down in the evening.

How to Use:
Use a small pot and fill it halfway with water. Add your ingredients, bring to a boil, then lower to the quietest simmer. Let it go for 1 to 2 hours. Keep an eye on the water level and top it off as needed.
You can reuse what’s left later in the day or the next morning. Just store the pot in the fridge and reheat it when you’re ready.
These simmer pots are not meant to be strong. They are just a quiet way to make your space feel better, using what you already have.
